Renovation queen, mom, and all-around powerhouse Mina Starsiak Hawk is heading to the Johnson County Home + Garden Show presented by Renewal by Andersen, January 24-26 at the Overland Park Convention Center! Known for her hit HGTV show Good Bones, Mina is a master at breathing new life into old spaces.

Before you see her live on-stage Saturday, check out this fun Q&A we had with her and get a closer look at the woman behind the magic—and a few fun facts you might not know!

Are you a plant fanatic, or is your green thumb lacking? 

While I have the ability to keep plants alive, it has never been a priority so every plant in my home is fake with the exception of a 3" tall cactus Jack made me buy him! On top Of that, our dog will dig up and eat any plant he can reach. So, we’re a no plant household for the time being at least. 

What’s in your bag or purse? 

I don't carry a purse, lol. But I always have my basic tool bag in the back of my car; drill, measuring tape, hammer, screws, caulk, adhesive, drywall filler...

In your opinion what’s the most underrated tool in your toolbox?

A 5 in 1

Tips for incorporating a new design trend into your home?

I always suggest trying out new trending in fairly impermanent ways. Remember when palm leaves were all the rage? If you wallpapered your room with them you’re probably fairly committed. But if you bought drapes in that pattern, you could easily take them down when they trend passed. So, my advice, think about longevity when making those kinds of decisions and try to stick with timeless looks for projects that are going to be harder to update in the future. 

What is one project you tell people to NOT do as DIY?

Anything that can flood your home or start a fire. 

Tell us about your pet(s).

Frank the tank is our 7-year-old Dogo Argentino. He’s 150 pounds but desperately wants to be a lap dog. He doesn’t care how he’s getting love, as long as he’s getting it. So the kids laying on top of him is his happy place. 

What’s your favorite paint color? 

Greek Villa. It’s the perfect soft white. 

Tips for big outdoor impact in landscaping or curb appeal?

Fresh mulch. It’s a game changer for a big impact when refreshing landscaping. 

What is your favorite type of music to listen to when you’re working?

Anything upbeat!

Ideas for a home-themed hostess or thank you gift?

A membership to this app called Front Door. It’s $25 bucks for a YEAR and you can call an expert in practically anything and they will walk you through how to fix the thing in your home; replace a faucet, change a filter, replace your icemaker (I’ve used them for this twice now, lol) change out a light and almost anything else you can think of. Because, let’s be honest, who really needs another bottle of wine or cheese board. 

Which HGTV star would you most like to work with and why?

I always love working with Alison Victoria. She’s a force to be reckoned with and an amazing designer and we’ve always had fun when we’ve had the opportunity to get together in the past. 

What is an outdated home trend you hope doesn’t come back?

Shiplap.
